Sign Board Types Compared: LED vs ACP vs Acrylic vs Steel vs Flex
The right sign board depends on where it goes, how visible it needs to be at night, and your budget. In short: LED sign boards are the best all-round choice for shops that need to stand out day and night; ACP is a durable outdoor facade material; acrylic and stainless-steel letters give a premium branded look; and flex/glow boards are the most affordable. This guide compares all five side by side. Aadlabs Signs & Prints has designed, fabricated and installed every one of these in Ahmedabad since 2005.

LED sign boards
LED sign boards light up letters and logos with energy-efficient LED modules, so they stay crisp and bright in daylight and glow clearly at night. They come in several forms — front-lit acrylic, halo-lit channel letters, LED glow sign boards and backlit light boxes. Because the LED modules are rated for tens of thousands of hours, a well-built LED sign runs for years with little maintenance. For most shops this is the best all-round choice.
ACP sign boards
ACP (aluminium composite panel) is a rigid, weather-resistant sheet used as a facade background rather than a light source. It gives a clean, modern, durable surface for large building fronts and outdoor signage. On its own an ACP board is not illuminated, so it is usually paired with LED-lit acrylic or metal letters for night visibility.
Acrylic letters
Solid and 3D acrylic letters give a deep-gloss, premium branded look for storefronts, receptions and interiors. They can be left unlit, front-lit or halo-lit. Acrylic is versatile and cost-effective for high-impact branding without the weight of metal.

Stainless-steel letters
Stainless-steel (SS) letters are the most durable option — corrosion-resistant, long-lasting and virtually maintenance-free. In brushed or mirror finish, often halo-lit, they signal a premium, established brand. They cost more but last the longest, which suits corporate offices, hotels and showrooms.
Flex & glow sign boards
Flex and glow sign boards use a backlit printed flex or acrylic face for even, vivid illumination at the lowest cost. They are the most affordable way to get a lit sign, which makes them popular for budget projects and businesses that change branding often. The trade-off is a shorter service life than LED or metal.
Which should you choose?
- Retail shop that must stand out day and night: LED sign board (front-lit acrylic or LED glow).
- Large outdoor building facade: ACP panel with LED-lit letters.
- Premium storefront or reception: solid acrylic or 3D letters, illuminated.
- Long-life corporate / hotel branding: halo-lit stainless-steel letters.
- Tight budget or temporary signage: flex / glow board.

Frequently asked questions
Which sign board is best for a shop front?
For most shops, an LED sign board (front-lit acrylic or LED glow) gives the best balance of visibility, branding and cost, because it stays bright day and night. ACP suits large outdoor facades, acrylic and stainless-steel letters suit premium storefronts, and flex/glow boards suit tight budgets.
Which is better for a shop front: ACP or acrylic sign board?
ACP is a rigid aluminium composite panel used mainly as a durable, weather-resistant facade background, and is not lit on its own. Acrylic letters give a cleaner, more premium branded look and can be illuminated. Many shopfronts combine both: an ACP facade with illuminated acrylic or LED letters on top.
Which sign board lasts the longest?
Stainless-steel letters last the longest because the metal is corrosion-resistant and needs almost no maintenance. Professionally built LED sign boards and ACP facades also last many years. Flex-based glow boards have the shortest life.
Do ACP sign boards light up at night?
A plain ACP sign board is not illuminated and relies on daylight or external lighting. To make it visible at night, it is combined with LED-lit acrylic letters, halo-lit letters or a backlit light box mounted on the ACP facade.
